The 3 Things You Need to Get Fit (If You Don’t Know Where to Start)

Have you been training… but still feel stuck?

Have you been training for a while and started to notice that some things are improving slightly, but other things still feel just as difficult?

You begin to wonder if what you’re doing is actually working. Maybe you’ve even caught yourself thinking, “Am I just wasting my time?”

And the more you try to figure it out, the more confusing it seems to become.

Why this happens

This usually happens because there is so much information about fitness and exercise, and most of it focuses on just one thing.

One program focuses on strength. Another focuses on cardio. Another focuses on something completely different.

And while none of these are wrong on their own, the problem is that they don’t show you the full picture.

So you end up focusing on one area — or maybe two — without even realizing that there are other important areas your body needs to develop as well.

And that’s where things start to feel unbalanced… and progress starts to slow down.

The mistake most beginners make

For example, let’s say you want to build muscle.

If you search online, you’ll most likely find programs that focus mainly on strength training. And at first, it seems to work — you start seeing a bit more definition, maybe even some muscle growth.

But after a while, progress starts to slow down.

Why? Because you’re only focusing on one part of your fitness, while other important areas are being ignored.

So even though you’re putting in effort, your progress feels limited — like something is missing.

The 3 things you actually need

Getting fitter or stronger doesn’t come from just doing one type of training.

In reality, your body needs a simple balance of three key areas:

  • Strength (getting stronger)
  • Endurance (your muscles working for longer)
  • Cardio (your overall fitness and stamina)

When these three work together, your body becomes stronger, more capable, and more balanced.

1. Strength — Your foundation

Strength is about helping your muscles become stronger so that everyday movements feel easier.

It allows you to do things like lift, push, or carry with more control and less effort — whether that’s picking up groceries, standing up from a chair, or doing basic exercises like squats or push-ups.

Building strength gives your body a solid foundation, making everything else feel more manageable.

2. Endurance — Keep going for longer

Endurance is about helping your muscles keep working for longer without getting tired too quickly.

Think about having to carry something heavy for a period of time — like moving a couch or other furniture. The longer your muscles can keep working without giving up, the better your endurance.

Building endurance helps you handle everyday tasks more easily and keeps you from feeling tired too quickly during activity.

3. Cardio — Your energy and stamina

Cardio is what helps your heart and lungs work better, so your body can keep moving without getting tired too quickly.

It’s what allows you to walk longer, jog, climb stairs, or stay active without feeling completely out of breath.

The better your cardio fitness is, the longer you can stay active — and the quicker you can recover after doing something challenging.

How to start (keep it simple)

Now that you understand the three key areas, the next step is simple — don’t try to do everything at once.

Start with one or two areas that feel manageable to you. Focus on keeping things simple and consistent.

As you build confidence, you can gradually begin to include the other areas that feel new or more challenging.

The goal is not to be perfect — it’s to start and build over time.

As you start to notice that things which once felt difficult begin to feel easier, your fitness journey becomes more enjoyable — and more rewarding.
